I am a little behind on blogging!  I've been a little caught up with writing (and farming out articles) for the Wynne Progress as well as riding bikes and here celebrating Kara's birthday.  She picked the Second Line in midtown Memphis.  It was outstanding!

The cute, little (and I mean little) restaurant is right next door to Restaurant Iris where we celebrated Kara's birthday a few years back.  It's also owned by renowned chef Kelly English, voted 2009 Food and Wine's Best New Chef.  He was a cook during his college years at Ole Miss, graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and worked in New Orleans at several restaurants.  This petite, second restaurant of his opened in late 2013.

If you have more than a group of 4 people, go early and try to sit out on the patio where we were.  We had 19 people and split into two tables which worked perfectly.  We had slow service but the food was fantastic.  Their portion sizes were right on.  There's nothing crazier like being served a main course that could feed ten adults and a side item to feed five more. I ordered the Beet Swarza Wrap with feta and pickled vegetables.  It was outstanding.  All dinners are served with a side, called Groceries on the menu. I chose the perfectly cooked and seasoned turnip greens.  I loved that dinner was served on small trays like jelly roll pans and sides in a mini cast iron skillet.

For a secret birthday sweet for Kara, we ordered her their famous New Orleans style bread pudding with a candle on top of course.  We enjoyed singing Happy Birthday to her out on the patio.  What a perfect dessert to end the perfect birthday party at The Second Line.  You'll love the musical instruments decor throughout the restaurant.

They don't take reservations, so like I was told over the phone earlier in the week, large parties can be sat but it took a while.  Their busiest time is 6-8 pm and all 19 of us arrived at 6:15 and we split off into two tables by 6:30, it was amazing and we give them a shout out for handling our large, celebratory group.  Be sure to make The Second Line a priority on your list.  You won't be disappointed.
